By Lee Johns, VP Product Management, Starboard Storage Systems -- It is predicted that as many as 80% of all server workloads will be virtualized by 2015!  Much of the credit for enabling this should go to VMware who continue to set the pace as the virtualization leader. VMware made server virtualization possible. However, what made it viable was x86 processors driven by Moore’s law. Quite simply, the power and performance of the underlying platforms could not go unexploited and most individual workloads could only consume a fraction of the available processing power and memory.

Filling a Vacuum: Storage for Mixed Workloads

By Lee Johns, VP Product Management - When I was studying Zoology at university (yes, I am an “ologist”), everyone asked me if I wanted to be a zookeeper. Nothing could have been farther from my mind. What fascinated me was the interplay between incredibly adapted creatures and the complex ecosystems that they inhabit and how every possible role is in some way filled by a different organism. Someone once said “Nature abhors a vacuum,” and the animal kingdom illustrates that well. But what does that have to do with storage, I hear you asking?
