This week I attended the Flash Memory Summit in Santa Clara California. Since Flash is hot there were close to 2000 attendees and a reasonable size trade show floor. This is not an end user systems show but it is a showcase for how flash technology is developing and being used within technology today. Of course there are many uses of Flash and I was mainly concerned with storage use cases.

Solid State (SSD) is expensive so it is worth some time making sure that you are making the most of the SSD resources you have.
Enterprise Strategy group1 (ESG) research has shown that the top two barriers to SSD adoption by companies that have not already taken the plunge but are considering it are cost and capacity. I guess you can sum that up as people feel SSD is too expensive and too small for their workloads.

In the recent article “Unified Hybrid SSD storage vs. Unified Storage” George Crump, of Storage Switzerland, discusses the use of SSD by legacy storage vendors and rightly points out that while unified storage systems claim to be hybrid storage systems they are far from it.
